Gilded Age Fashion Talk and Tea

Rachel Bellis, Kingsland Manor’s Fall 2023 Intern, will present her research on an elaborate black gown, made c. 1880, in the Kingsland Manor collection. The dress offers a fascinating look into the highly ritualized mourning practices of the 19th century, when a bereaved woman could signal her social status, wealth, and refinement through strict adherence to dress etiquette. The gown demonstrates the high level of elegance expected of a member of a prominent New Jersey family, and offers valuable clues about the personal life of the particular woman who wore it, Martha Kingsland Carryl.

After the presentation, attendees will enjoy a casual "cream tea" consisting of assorted pastries, fruit, and tea.

Only 25 tickets will be sold to this event. Once the tickets are sold, we encourage anyone interested to join the waitlist.

Proceeds will be used to fund future clothing research and conservation work.
