In April 1977, we received a donation from Roger Leverich Kingsland Jr. of Pittsburgh of a wool bedspread. Roger’s father, Roger Leverich Kingsland Sr., was born in Belleville, New Jersey, in 1882 and was the great-great grandson of the original Joseph Kingsland who moved into the area in 1790. Roger Jr.’s great grandfather was Richard Kingsland, whose brother was Joseph Kingsland III. Joseph and Richard were partners in a local paper manufacturing business.

Roger Jr. was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, in 1915 and was married to Lois Long of Pittsburgh in 1946. Lois was born in Pittsburgh in 1921. Roger passed away in 1991 and Lois in 2006.

The description that was written when the wool bedspread was accepted by the Historic Restoration Trust was: 7’ x 6’3”; fringe; natural color and navy blue; made from wool sheared from sheep on the Kingsland property.

The picture of Roger Leverich Kingsland Sr. is from the Trust archives. The other photo is of his nephew, Richard Kingsland, courtesy Dave Kingsland.
