Square Grand Piano

In April 1991, we received a donation of a square grand piano and piano bench from Silas Mountsier III. Silas has the wonderful home and gardens on Rutgers Place. The Mountsier-Hardie gardens are open to the public in April and September through the Garden Conservancy. The grounds have also been used for charity benefits for Nutley nonprofit organizations.

The description that was written of the piano when it was accepted by the Historic Restoration Trust was: square grand piano; 35-1/2” x 61” x 37” high; made by Mathushek Piano Manufacturing Co., Est. 1863; octagonal sided legs 23” high, walnut? And for the bench: 30” x 15” x 19” high; legs to match.

An appraisal dated the age of the piano and bench to the 1920s. That matches the opinion of a piano tuner who recently tuned the piano.

The square grand piano and bench are in our Ballroom and are used for events throughout the year.
