Vase, Chairs, and Tables

In 1977, Mr. and Mrs. William Happe from Hay Avenue, Nutley donated several items to the Historic Restoration Trust for use in the Kingsland Manor. The chairs, tables and a vase are just a portion of the Happe’s donation. We believe that William Happe was an accountant in town and would like to know more about him and the family.

The vase is displayed in different locations throughout the Manor. Currently, we have it displayed in the Ballroom. The description written when the vase was received reads: Victorian vase; blue, 16” high; 26” largest circumference; picture – garden scene, man and lady; colors, gold trim around picture; broken and mended around top.

The chairs are displayed in the Parlor. The description of the chairs when they were donated reads : Love Seat mahogany frame; curved veneer back; seat 34” in back and 37” in front; length of arm 24”; blue needlepoint; Belter design? Armchair seat 17-1/2” x 20”; gold needlepoint on seat and oval piece in back.

One of the tables donated is a marble-top Victorian table displayed in the Ballroom. The description from when it was received says: Marble Top 23” x 29” oval; walnut; ornately carved base – 4 legs with middle ornament.

The second table, a library table, is displayed in our Parlor and has a mystery inscription in pencil on the underside of the drawer. The description given when it was donated reads: mahogany top 39-1/2” x 24”, height 27-1/2”; 1 drawer on the underside which is written, “In Remember of November 6, 1860, Lincoln and Hamlin Table, Joseph Huberth Racoch.” The name of the person is not clear except for the “Joseph,” and we are not sure who that person was or how he might be related to Lincoln. The table is possibly a commemorative piece honoring the election of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin.
